How to study these cases.

The eight prompts below are the original public case shelf. They are teaching objects. This page does not add winners, scores, or judge quotations that the archive did not publish. Use each case to practise a different first split.

01. MTR Hong Kong

A public-service operations and pricing problem. Students should separate crowding, reliability, fare yield, and political feasibility. A ticket increment for 2016–2017 is not only a finance slide; it is a rider-incidence problem. Build a tree before proposing a percentage.

02. SK-II Japan

A globalisation and organisation-design problem. The interesting tension is product innovation versus geographic expansion. Ask where SK-II should play, whether P&G’s centre can support that play, and what local Japan capabilities must not be flattened.

03. C-West1 Japan

A sparse, almost narrative prompt. Students should not invent a full corporate history. Practise making a decision from incomplete evidence, stating what was lost, and designing a recovery of knowledge, brand memory, and operations with explicit assumptions.

04. MAS Malaysia

A crisis, reputation, and marketing-rebuild problem after MH370 and MH17. Treat human loss with restraint. The commercial question is how a carrier earns permission to be chosen again. Separate safety communications, network economics, and brand repair. Do not turn tragedy into a growth slogan.

05. Starbucks India

A market-entry and competitive-occasion problem. Size the relevant coffee occasion, not a slogan about the middle class. Joint-venture constraints, local chains, and store economics should drive whether to accelerate, pause, or change format.

06. JPMorgan Chase

A talent-system case. Evaluate the ReEntry programme as an operating system: hiring yield, performance, culture, and whether the pilot should scale. People cases still need numbers, but the recommendation is about management practice, not a product launch.

07. Google in 2014

A strategy and innovation-process case dated to 2014. Stay in that year. Ask what Google should do next given the businesses and threats described, not given later public history. Students should resist using hindsight as if it were analysis.

08. Morgan Stanley

A performance-versus-culture people case. Rob Parson’s production is not the whole story. Practise stakeholder maps, trade-offs between revenue and standards, and a recommendation a real manager could implement in one review cycle.

After a study session, write one governing question and one recommendation sentence per case. Then read the notes on structure and how to compete.
